Shopping
Most Phuket resorts have a wide selection of souvenir shops. For serious buyers, the Jungceylon complex at Patong Beach is a giant shopping center with nearly 200 stores and a large food court. The Phuket Central Festival is a department store and shopping center on the main highway to the airport, just outside the city of Phuket. Here you will find a number of designer names at very reasonable prices. Most cities or resorts have their own markets that sell fresh food to the local community. Even if you do not buy anything, these markets are worth a visit to savor the sights, smells and atmosphere of Thai life that you will not find in the larger resorts.

The best time to visit Thailand
When is the best time to visit Thailand? Here's where to go when and how to avoid monsoon season, from Bangkok to the beaches, Koh Samui to Koh Lanta The best time to visit Thailand depends exactly where you're going. The islands on one side of the country have a slightly different rainy season to those on the other; the good news is that this extends Thailand's dry, sunny season. So if it's rainy and grey in one place, it's a short hop over the coast to sunshine on the other side. Basically, December to March are the best months to go to Thailand - though as with any tropical destination, a short and ridiculously torrential burst of rain is unpredictably possible, even on the sunniest of days.

Thailand travel advice
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to the provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla on the Thai-Malaysia border. See Terrorism Thai authorities introduced a smoking ban in November 2017 on beaches in certain tourist areas, including in Koh Samui, Pattaya and in Phuket, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chon Buri and Songkhla provinces. Those caught smoking in non-designated areas could face a 100,000 baht fine or up to a year in prison. You should follow local guidance. People have been prosecuted for criticising the 2014 military coup. You should be wary of making political statements in public. Lèse-majesté, (criticism of the monarchy in any form) is a crime which can be broadly interpreted, and carries a long jail sentence. Due to roadworks causing congestion on the route from central Bangkok to Don Mueang airport, the Thai Immigration Bureau have advised travellers to allow more time than usual, around 3 hours, to reach the airport. Proof of onward travel and funds
Immigration officials in Thailand may ask you for proof of onward travel (e.g. a return or onward air ticket). You should make all reservations before leaving for Thailand. Some airlines have refused to board passengers without evidence of onward travel. Immigration officials may also ask for evidence of adequate finances equivalent to 10,000 baht per person, or 20,000 baht per family (for on-arrival-visa visitors). Other visa types may have different requirements: you should check with the Thai Immigration Authority before travelling.

Travel insurance: why you have to
In the event of a serious accident or serious illness, the insurance can cover expenses of hundreds of thousands of euros or dollars. For example, an uninsured Australian who seriously injures himself in Alabama may have to deal, very salty, with the expensive American health care system. For a tourist bitten by a rabid dog in Rwanda or for a backpacker who needs air rescue in the Himalayas, the benefits of travel insurance are quite evident. High prices do not always mean the best coverage. Consider carefully which aspects are important to you. It makes no sense to pay to be insured on renting a car if you will not drive or baggage if everything you bring with you will be a backpack full of dirty socks and an old iPod. To give up some options can considerably reduce the insurance premium. What is necessary to insure? Health insurance is very important. From this point of view the policies vary, so read carefully all the clauses. If you suffer from the heart or a serious condition, you will be asked to provide detailed information before signing the policy. If you plan on doing sports, skiing off-piste or bungee jumping, make sure these activities are covered. Accidents that are practiced at professional level are usually not. The insurance premiums are calculated based on your origin, age, destination and duration of the trip, with particular attention to some particular destinations. When you go to countries like the United States, where the health insurance industry is a millionaire industry, or for countries with very different standards from those you are used to, it is advisable to opt for a policy with a high coverage. Some companies will grant you unlimited medical assistance in exchange for a high premium.
